It's not everyday you are contacted by a Huffington Post contributor Getrude Matshe about whether I would participate in a pilot program to be documented for Huffington Post in a 3 part series. The Huffington Post is the largest online News site so I am excited to included in an article.
I was intrigued by the idea of creating a comprehensive and credible book in 40 hours. It took me 40 weeks to write my first book “Brand Yourself”, 40 days to convert it into a training program “Brand Yourself Action Plan”.
I was scared but game.
I liked the concept as it reflects a book idea I have had - How You Survive Success and Celebrity. How to sustain your ’15 minutes’ of fame and live to tell the story?
How can you be incredibly productivity? How do you get prepared? What do you put in place to sustain a high level of output? What strategies and support do you need in place to remain 100% focused? What Action Plan do you put in place to achieve goal? In a crisis what do we do? How do we cope with the pressures?
Look at social media sensation Jason Russell, the mastermind behind the Kony 2012 campaign who crashed and burned at the eleventh hour. What did he need to do to survive the instant celebrity and it's demands and deliver successfully his campaign? He checked all the boxes off in creating the perfect brand message using the key elements of: specialization, leadership, attributes, distinctiveness, visibility, consistent and relationship building. But how do you ensure you outlast your message?
In comparison, consider Madonna, Obama, Oprah, Branson, JK Rowling - What methods do they and other celebrity brands use to remain grounded, available, organised and productive? How do they survive their celebrity and still churn an incredible volume of output?
Not only do celebrities need to survive their success; so too do CEO’s, senior executives, successful entrepreneurs, musicians, rising stars, media personalities and sports people. What can we take from personal brands that have stood the test of celebrity and endured their success to ensure ours? How did they cope? How did they fulfill the demands placed on them?
The movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker, “How does she do it?” suggests superwoman style ‘faster than a speeding bullet’ activity and very little sleep. Our voyeuristic fascination with Britney’s spiral into chaos reveals that some coping strategies don’t serve you and everyone needs a solid support network.
Success holds a mirror to your life. In-congruence with your public and private life will soon be revealed; Madonna’s unapologetic “I’ve got something to say about it.” stance sustained her despite worldwide criticism at more than one time in her life. Tiger Woods brand unraveled when his “family guy” facade revealed he had more in common with Charlie Sheen than we would have guessed.
But Charlie Sheen is the perfect example of how to survive your fame despite yourself! As yourself! Underlying this is a willingness to learn from our mistakes, establish positive coping strategies, recognize the value of our brand and reputation and leverage your true self.
