Arriving just in time for Father’s day, Nine’s new Aussie drama House Husbands breaks the stereotypes all around. Filmed in Melbourne, House Husbands is a comedy drama about four fathers who for different reason have found themselves the stay-at-home parent.
The show follows Lewis (Gary Sweet), Mark (Rhys Muldon), Kane (Gyton Grantley) and Justin (Firass Dirani) as they attempt to raise their children. The first day of school, terrifying for the children had the Fathers in fear as well. While surrounded by able looking mothers, the fathers gravitate towards each other and bond over their situations. It is a take on young families that Australian TV haven’t explore until now.
It is a refreshing turn of events for Nine whose shows are known to revolve around the badass action-drama with cops and crime. House Husbands explores both usual and unusual family dynamics, complete with disgraced football stars, retiring struggles, custody battles and gay couples. The impressive Aussie cast has taken this turning point in Australian TV into their stride, providing an entertaining show for lazy Sunday nights.
Nine has brought together a cast from a variety of backgrounds, comedians and dramatic actors mixing surprisingly well to give stellar performances that depict entirely believable relationships. Some audiences, however, are complaining of some unlikely moments in the show script, such as the runaway bus and playing on supposed stupidity of men when it comes to raising children. Overcoming some stereotypes while playing to others is obviously Nines way to keep audiences coming back.
The show has been forgiven for the dramatic ‘reality’ because it was funny and fresh and Australian audiences have been craving a change. The look at the modern Australian family has been a much needed shock to system for audiences who are expecting more of the same from Nine. The pleasant change is likely to have House Husbands continuing its premier success.
